The majority of red meat and beef in America is corn fed. Corn is not these animals natural diet. It actually makes them sick, thus the need to pump them full of antibiotics. Corn is a starch that contains mostly monosaccharides and is quickly broken down in the blood stream as glucose (sugar) that raises blood sugar levels dramatically and causes the animal to store and gain more fat than they naturally would. Thus, changing the composition of their flesh to contain higher amounts of the unhealthy and potentially harmful type of long chain, proinflammatory omega 6 fatty acid know as animal saturated fat. Eating high amounts of this type of red meat or beef can lead to weight gain as well as a whole host of cardiovascular diseased later in life.
Grass fed beef on the other hand has three times as much omega 3 fatty acids, has four times as much vitamin E, and has eight times as much beta-carotene!
Another type of fatty acid found in abundance in grass fed beef is CLA--conjugated linoleic acid. This medium-chain omega 6 fatty acid has been widely studied for its anti-cancer and tumor-fighting abilities, as well as for its ability to reduce the accumulation of abdominal fat.
So next time you're thinking red meat is bad for you, think again, pay the extra couple of bucks, and go for the nutritional powerhouse that is grass fed beef!
