How do I start CrossFit - a discussion to be continued in our forum

When you look at all the CrossFit workouts you see online, starting a program as intense (and effective) as this can be pretty overwhelming. This article is designed to give you a little advice on where to start at our facility:

How to start CrossFit?

Depending on your current fitness level, age and experience, success with any conditioning program often depends on how you begin....(click on "read entire article")

Above all else, consistency is the key. CrossFit is for those who accept the truth – fitness doesn’t come in a bottle, it must be earned, not purchased. Avoiding injuries, achieving the right balance between work and recovery, and perhaps knowing how to deal with previous injuries and any current limitations all play a role in getting the body you want.

For those willing to train, to get progressively better, progressively more intense – there is no better program anywhere, at any price. It does not matter if you are a NAVY SEAL or my grandmother – my advice would be very similar. Your workouts should include functional movements, with as much variety as your imagination allows, and be performed as intensely as your ability to perform the movements with correct mechanics will allow.

At Fit and Fearless, you have 3 choices when beginning CrossFit:

1) On-Ramp: The On-Ramp program consists of 12 sessions over a six-week period. It is designed to prepare men and women to enter our CrossFit classes.

On-Ramp provides skill development and exposure to our basic movements, teaching mechanics, consistency, and then intensity - ensuring your safety and success at the next level.

You will also learn the lingo: What's a WoD/AMRAP/thruster? How do I perform a power clean? Who's Fran?

Over the six-week period, you will safely build up your skills and improve performance, learn how to properly fuel your body (nutrition/supplements/hydration), and how to properly recover. You will learn to meet your own athletic goals and ideal body composition.

Each session includes a progressively more challenging workout. We will also cover joint mobility, stretching,

Participants will see significant improvements in performance and body composition at the end of the 6 weeks.

This class is perfect for men and women who place high importance on proper mechanics, and want to develop a reasonable high level of proficiency, quickly.

This is also the right place for those who do not already have a familiarity with barbell work, are just beginning their first conditioning program, or are coming back after a long layoff.

2) Elements Program: Elements consists of 3 1-on-1 training sessions with a CrossFit coach. During these sessions you will be introduced to the movements, Olympic lifts, kettle bells, medicine balls, etc.

We will also take your first body comp, introduce you to the nutritional philosophy

Ready to go hard? If you are comfortable with barbells and interval training, then this might be the place for you to start.

3) Just jump right in to classes. If you have been reading the journal or have gained some experience crossfitting at another CrossFit gym then this is an option for you. It is a foolish place to start if you do not know (among other things) how to clean and jerk, what interval training means, or how to do a kipping pull up.
