Oldboy Hallway Gauntlet
by Matt Caballero
Released in 2003, South Korean film Oldboy features a protagonist by the name of Dae-Su Oh (or Oh Dae-Su) and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. What I will say is that the entire movie is a big revenge set up and you may or may not see the ending coming…but leave it to foreign filmmakers to create a plot for a movie that wouldn’t fly here in the states (you should watch it). But the plot is not the point of this post. The point is the fight scene.
Here we have Dae-su at one end of a hallway. On the other end of the hallway is an elevator. In between him and the elevator is over 2 dozen thugs armed with various weapons. I can’t tell you the importance of this fight because it would be a spoiler but I can say that this scene makes it look like an action movie and it really isn’t.
Armed with nothing but sheer determination and a hammer, he makes it through two dozen attackers not without incident or injury, however, and eventually makes his way to the top but unfortunately the movie doesn’t end so victoriously for our protagonist. Give this scene a watch and if you’re in the mood to watch a very dark movie you can find it on Netflix.
