Fit to Fight Diary Pt. 3: Comparative Religion 101; or a Spiritual Guide to Technical Advance
The West
During the course of Krav Maga training, it's not uncommon for a student to notice that certain techniques, no matter how hard one tries to master them, are more elusive than others. The roundhouse kick may be picked up relatively quickly, the defensive front kick might feel as natural as waking up in the morning, and the back kick, on the very first day of training, might greet the student like an old friend. Yet the side kick, no matter how many times the aspirant attempts it, no matter how loudly he/she grunts in frustration and throws his/her head toward the floor and his/her hip out in malicious agitation, might leave the student not only feeling incompetent, impotent, and impatient, but in physical pain, his/her outer hips throbbing and aching, and this no matter how many times the student has been told by his/her CrossFit instructors that particular stretches, consistently performed, should solve the problem or how often he/she has been nagged by his/her Krav instructors about the lack of proper angularity of his/her pivot foot in relation to the ground. It's important when confronting such obstinate techniques to be patient and, most important, faithful. Mastering a technique can take months, even years. Belief will see the true aspirant through: belief that at some point in the future (maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow), some instructor is going to teach that technique in such a way, or move a limb to just the right angle, that the lightbulb will go on and it will be as if the technique had been there all along, waiting to be picked up, like a seashell on the beach.
A student possessed of this kind of perseverance, resolve, and spiritual resignation will be rewarded (eventually, though often after many hours of heavy drinking) with ancient and cryptic knowledge: that constant head movement makes it nearly impossible for an opponent to hit one's face, that turning one's back foot outward 45 degrees allows for greater ease of lateral movement and a sharper jab, that whipping one's shoulder after one's hips will give the lead hook the kind of power that has for the last seven excruciating months been impossible to generate. When the clouds break like this and the scales fall from the student's eyes, that's the A-Ha Moment, the Hallelujah Moment, the Come-to-Jesus Moment, the Moment of Infinite Delight spoken of by saints, poeticized by poets, and guaranteed to bring one unending pleasure. That is, until another uncooperative technique comes along that makes the student want to bang his/her head against a table with great force. That is martial arts and western religion in a nutshell: Suffering in this life; suffering in the next life as well, most likely.
The East
Some time ago, legend tells us, a youngish and daring man made his way to a sparring room in a dry and ridiculous land to try his hand against a fighter of far greater skill, strength, speed, guile, experience, pluck, gall, and moxie. This other fighter was a teacher of Krav Maga, Mixed Martial Arts, and many other deadly fighting systems. He had fought as both an amateur and a professional. He had hundreds of hours of sparring experience under his belt. The acolyte, on the other hand, though youngish and daring and handsome, had been sparring for a total of 30 minutes, give or take. As well, this aspirant, this seeker of knowledge, was known throughout the land for refusing to keep his hands up while training, this despite the protestations and pleas of innumerable teachers, guides, and seers, who knew what they were talking about. Still, the student shook off his fears and his concerns about his own inadequacies and challenged the teacher to spar. And for the first minute or so, the student stood his ground; he bobbed and weaved and moved his feet; he attacked and defended with relish, if not skill. Years later, witnesses would recount with poetic exaltation that the man didn't completely embarrass himself, that he "did fine, not great." Still, just as it is nature's command that the sun will rise in the east, that the swallows will return to Capistrano, and that I will wear a brand-new white shirt to a party where only red wine is being served, so was it inevitable that the acolyte would drop his hands from his face at some point. When this finally happened, the Instructor, seizing the moment, threw his leg in the air and kicked the student flush on the nose, sending him reeling backwards into a wall, crying out in pain, blood pouring from his face. Those in attendance gasped in horror and sympathy. And the acolyte pressed his hands to his face and he called out for mercy and he closed his eyes and he dropped his head in shame and he couldn't believe this was happening, like, two months after he had gone in for surgery to have his deviated septum fixed. And as he ran toward the bathroom, the student, now flush with knowledge, thought to himself: I need to keep my hands up. Also, I need health insurance. The Buddhists call this sudden burst of enlightenment a Zen Slap, the moment when falsehood and inconstancy die away and true reality bursts into consciousness by another's hand ... or foot. And that is martial arts and eastern religion in a nutshell: Suffering in this life; suffering in the next life, probably, as well ... let's be honest.
